When Carrie Bradshaw, the shoe-loving central character of the HBO TV series Sex And The City, took a wrong turn after lunch in SoHo, she found herself on one of New York's grungier side streets and face-to-face with a mugger. "Please sir," she pleaded. "You can take my Fendi baguette, you can take my ring and my watch, but don't tak my Manolo Blahniks."

Thanks in part ot Sex And The City, Manolo Blahnik has become one of the handful of designers whose name is synonymous with their product.

 

 

Working alone without apprentices or assistants, Blahnik sketches his shoes, chisels the wooden lasts on which they are moulded and sculpts the heels. He has achieved all this without any formal training in shoe-making. "I didn't need it," Blahnik said, "because I've got the best taste in the world."

Roger Vivier

Roger Vivier has been called the "Fragonard of the Shoe". He designed extravagant richly-decorated shoes that he described as sculptures. He is credited with the design of the first Stiletto heel in 1954. Stiletto heels, the very thin high heel, were certainly around in the late 19th century as numerous fetish drawings attest, but Roger Vivier is know for reviving and developing this opulent style by using a thin rod of steel.
He used silk, pearls, beads, lace, applique and jewels to create unique decorations for his shoes. His most iconic design, the Pilgrim pumps with silver buckles (worn by Catherin Deneuve in the film Belle de Jour) received international publicity and many imitations.
